What is Fexofenadine hydrochloride

The hydrochloride salt derivative of fexofenadine, which has antihistaminic effect, is known as fexofenadine hydrochloride. It is a diarylmethane with long-lasting selective histamine H1 receptor antagonist. It is sold under the brand names like Allegra, Allegra-D, Mucinex Non-drowsy Allergy, Wal-fex, etc.

Uses

  • Fexofenadine is recommended for the symptomatic treatment of allergic rhinitis (“hay fever“), including symptoms such as watery eyes, runny nose, itchy eyes/nose, sneezing, hives, and itching in patients ≥2 years old.
  • Additionally, it can be used to alleviate the symptoms of urticaria (hives; red, itchy raised areas of the skin) including itching and rash in adults and children 6 years of age and older.
